After wowing with his debut album Cloak in 2016, Jordan Rakei has had a relatively quiet year to date. However, having relocated to the UK and recently inked a new record deal, the New Zealand-born talent has just dropped new single ‘Sorceress’ – and it’s a beauty. Rakei’s soft, warm vocals are layered amidst sonorous layers of noodling guitars, jazzy drums and stunning electronics. The result is warm, funky and fuzzy, and leaves you with the strong impression that Rakei’s brand of bewitching modern soul is here to stay. And with a new home at independent heavyweights Ninja Tune (home to Bonobo, Amon Tobin and Wiley), 2017 looks like it’s going to be another big year for Rakei. -HM
